"Cliff Hakim has
written the perfect book for those in the process of deepening
a friendship, seeking a friend, struggling with a friendship,
or saying good bye to a friend."
- Rev. Dr. Barbara Whittaker-Johns, Senior Minister,
First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, MA |
Cliff Hakim's best friend, Vin Calia, planned his
funeral the way most people plan a wedding. He chose the funeral
home, selected a veterans' cemetery, and arranged a celebratory
meal at his favorite Italian restaurant with special wines for his
family and friends. For the memorial service, Vin asked Cliff to
deliver his eulogy. But Vin also asked Cliff to share that eulogy
with him before the Big Day. "You
know, dignity," Vin said. This one word was paramount to
Vin. In Cliff's gut, he knew Vin wanted to be honored, honestly
and passionately, for his whole being. Vin also wanted to hear
Cliff's words before he died.
Through his time with Vin, Cliff learned how
to live in the moment, how to trust, how to make magic, how to
ask for what he wanted, how to enjoy the unexpected side trips
life has to offer, and how never to be afraid to start again.
Cliff was given a precious gift, one Vin would
have wanted him to share. Thus, Cliff wrote Life's Too Short
to Drink Cheap Wine: A Salute to Friendship to pass on his
blessings and these lessons to you. |
